Superintendent Hintz is not in attendance due to a medical emergency
Rich will moderate
All board members are here.
This will be a discussion of the district’s technology approach.
Each participant is describing their use of technology
Rich - Self-directed learning
Kate – child’s friend has cancer – Hoaw do you know? Child says it is on face book. Within 30 minutes the child had amassed a ton of information…
Linda Etim – patient descriptions of why they are there are not always clear. Internet is a way for her to research.
Kim R – Email has changed how she works.
Mike L – Technologically challenged – email … provides a way to move attachments back & forth.
Tim – Tech Guy – text messaging is immediate & having internet available everywhere has transformed the way we live.
Kim Green – instant information has changed our lives. What did we do before Google?
Steve Antolak – less paper. Easier to work in an electronic information age.
Lin – while teaching ‘voice’, uses i-book to record lessons, burn cds etc…
John – in law firm – he is at work all the time because of connectivity. Good & bad…
Lori Toll & Janet O’Connell from Weaver are here to teach the board about technology and how it has changed the classroom.
They are talking about how they use the computer, smart boards etc within their lessons…. They went through a 30 minute lesson on monarch butterflies that they use over a several week period in their classes.
Questions – Steve – is this only for the magnet? Can you share this over the district?
A – Tim – yes, we can share these across the district as of this fall
Q – Dean – Is this just for science or do the smart boards apply across other subjects.
A – These technologies can be applied over all subjects.
The technology engages the kids.
Taking a break to change presenters – Tim is taking over.
Technology Levy PPT Presentation
- What we might do with the money if the levy is successful
- Changing to learn, learning to change video. Produced by CoSN
o Talking about the current generation’s immersion in technology and the need to utilize technology to connect
o Talking about teachers using technology to impact their teaching process.
Technology Integration Collaborative Teachers – TICT’d
Describing TICT’d program and survey results from teachers
Projector mounted on the ceiling, wireless keyboard & mouse are the major components that enable the interactive nature of the program
72% say their students…
84% are saying that they are changing to new teaching methods
93% say they are better teachers because of this program
99% recommend TICT’d
Teachers say
2-way Street, allows the kids to be engaged more
Has brought things to life for me – not locked into the book
Helps visual learners
The kids are engaged
It’s not ‘the teacher knows everything’ we are engaged in learning
Brings the world into your room – focuses on the students
Students say
More organized & prepared
Seeing and hearing helps
Gets a lot of people involved
If levy passes – what happens?
Would the TICT’d model be followed? We don’t know yet.
We could get every student in the TICT’d model 3 years earlier.
Why do we need the money?
9.4 million Annual capital fund
7.2 million Goes to facilities, 2.2 million for technology
The tech funds go for tech maintenance, licenses, servers, personnel etc…
If we had the dedicated revenue, we could remove the 2.2 technology burden from the capital funds, use it for deferred maintenance on facilities… air conditioning etc…
We could take the 5 Million levy and better serve the district’s needs.
51% infrastructure
44% Learning Tools
5% Staff Development
Infrastructure $2,560,000
Teacher Workstations
Replacement Hardware
Enterprise Software
System Integration
Learning Tools $2,190,000
LCD Projectors
Document Cameras
Interactive whiteboards
Classroom amplification
One-to-one computing
Staff Development $250,000
Expansion of TICT Initiative
Moodle
Professional learning Communities
Wants to encourage an atmosphere of innovation – Skunk works example
(Encourage Innovation and appreciate failure)
Technology can help with this…
Questions and feedback
Rich – we want to answer your questions and get a sense of what you heard tonight, what else do you need?
Kim Green – Article in the StarTrib – MN schools get a “C” Where do you say Osseo rates?
A – We are doing well, but we don’t do something for every student. We are on the track to do that, but it will take years. There are disparities between and within buildings.
Strong overall, but innovation is in pockets.
Dean – Is TICT covering all grades?
A – 2nd through High School
Dean – If the 2.2 Million in capital spending would be freed up, what would it be spent on?
Kim? & Kate – We have several deferred projects that will help us protect our investment in our facilities. There have been more than $4 million in requests and only $300k approved over the last couple years. These are safety, security … In addition, curriculum adoption comes out of this fund. We have a large science curriculum adoption coming.
Steve Antolak – Depressing scenario. You can’t go to a business center or any type of conference center and not see this type of technology.
Would like to see us leverage technology that is already out in the hands of the students… they all have mp3’s etc… we don’t know what they have and how we can leverage this.
Tim wants to get together a group of technology leaders to brainstorm.
Steve – We have a lot of connectivity – can’t we use this to allow our teachers to have a class over ‘fiber’?
Tim – Yes, has had conversations with colleagues about this
Kim Green – Story about how this is already happening
Dean – Story about how this is already happening
Dean – New Science curriculum – could we reduce the cost by keeping existing ‘good’ stuff and supplement with technology?
Rich – Any other comments?
John – What would we like? – don’t ask me, ask my kids
Lin – Is struck that the kids are a mile ahead and the adults are running to catch up…
If she had her way, everyone would be trained & have equipment within 2 years or less. Really excited about this.
Linda – Was at a school today and was amazed at how … speaking in low voice, hard to hear… talking about the student’s expertise on the computer.
Rich
Review of meeting – asked the board to rate
Kim – comments & 4.5 rating
Steve – right track & 3.1415
Line – need more specifics & 4
Dean – good start, filled in data & 3
John – Good job educating board… 5
